Starting Seed
Autoflower varieties are extremely sensitive in their early stages of life and require constant attention. We root our seed in EarthPot (available OBC Northwest) degradable plugs in 50 cell trays. These plugs allow for easy plant removal and minimal transplant shock. Seeds are planted ¼” deep and covered lightly with soil.
Like all seed, water in gently and ensure constant moisture. Do not over-water. Keep temperatures above 68°F, and between 75-85°F for fastest germination rates.
During all hours of darkness, and when temperatures allow, we light supplement our autoflower seedlings. We use a minimum of 10k watts in a 30x100ft greenhouse.
The most important step in growing autoflowering varietals is transplanting seedlings when roots reach the bottoms of plugs, usually within 7 days of soil emergence. If roots become bound inside plugs, plants WILL flower regardless of how young they are. Four-inch tall colas are cute but unproductive, so be vigilant about checking plug bottoms for roots! We prefer to plant them into the field at about 2-3” in height. If plants are deprived of light, they will grow tall and spindly, and may break during transplant or in the elements.

Water in your field for at least 24 hours before transplanting. We strongly recommend using Vitamin B1 (Super Thrive, Thrive Alive, etc.) and liquid mycorrhizae (Myco Apply Injector Endo, Great White Liquid Orca) mixed into water wheel planter or other plant apparatus reservoirs. This will limit shock.
Field Prep
For autoflowers, we suggest growers plant in rows with 2’ spacing between plants and 4’ spacing between rows. We use 1000 lbs. of all purpose fertilizer per acre directly applied under plastic or directly in rows. If broadcast spreading, we recommend about 2000 lbs. per acre. Stutzman’s Nutri-rich 4-3-2 with 7% calcium is great option but any all purpose fertilizer with similar numbers will do.
