An interview with Austin Goodman, CEO & Founder of American Standard Hemp Co.
What makes your greenhouse grow/farm special? Had you worked with cannabis or as a farmer prior?
My company's role in the industry is a bit different than most. We are an operational management and development business. We contractually consult with owner/operators and investors to develop their cannabis businesses. We provide grow advice, audits, curing, trimming, and sales expertise.
What does your farm produce? Favorite strain?
Our main focus is high quality smokable flower grown in controlled environments. Additionally, we own a laboratory manufacture and sell our own line of CBD products, as well as white label for several other different brands.
We have developed our own strains: Topaz Prism (Origins Unknown) and Razzmatazz (Abacus X Topaz Prism). Additionally we carry Cat's Meow & Magic Bullet original cuts, and we are working to develop and manage different cultivars.
Historically we have had great success working with Oregon CBD strains, and we continue to use them for our field operations. My favorite nose is the Sour Space Candy (top seller for us), Suver Haze (I love that cheesy smell), Elektra, Lifter, & Special Sauce. I'm looking forward to all the new developments from Oregon CBD.
In your opinion, what makes greenhouse cultivation special?
We manage our greenhouse differently than most. Our growers are experienced indoor and greenhouse cannabis growers. Growing in a controlled environment assures a much more consistent crop; however, if you're not prepared for every problem that comes your way, one issue can become very serious overnight. It requires constant attention, knowledge and experience to grow successfully in a controlled environment. The result is a boutique product that isn't easily replicated.
What are some of your favorite technological advancements in greenhouse cultivation you’ve seen in the industry?
Automation is key. Being able to set your grow house up where climate controls, light deprivation, watering, etc. can all be monitored and controlled remotely is a huge advancement. This allows our experienced growers to focus on IPM and plant maintenance and lessens the physical workload.
Any good stories of obstacles you’ve had to overcome in the greenhouse?
Pests will always be an issue. Keeping your greenhouse clean is more important than anything. Once a pest or contaminant problem becomes prevalent it is a battle to get back to homeostasis. We have challenged ourselves to be proactive instead of reactionary when it comes to obstacles.
Do you have any advice for anyone entering the industry? Where do you think the industry is headed?
Slow down and enjoy the process. We tend to rush an outcome without really knowing what the outcome is. This industry is so new and will naturally and unnaturally progress. Focus on what is manageable and what you can offer the industry. I've seen too many people hop in with grandiose ideas, but without operational skill. If you have never grown a single plant before you shouldn't think you're capable of managing a commercial grow house. Cannabis is a horticultural speciality crop; even the most skilled grower will still experience 'growing' pains.
And finally, if there are any people that you’d like to recognize from your farm or the industry in general that have helped get the company to where it is now?
We have had our ups and downs in the industry just like everyone else. I'd like to give a special shout out to those who are keeping it real.
