Storing cannabis seeds is fairly simple and can keep them viable for decades, if done properly. We’ve tested batches of seed produced years prior and found germination rates still at upwards of 95%. Hemp seeds by nature require dormancy time, and when they come out of it can be up to you. Follow these four simple steps and your seed will be good to go for next year and beyond.
Keep it dry - really dry. Any kind of moisture is a major indicator to plants it is time to sprout. We ship our seeds with desiccant packs, so keep the packs and seeds in the container and stay worry free. Make sure lids are closed tightly and keep them in a dry spot.
Keep it dark – natural sunlight is the most important to avoid, but unless necessary, keep your seeds in uninterrupted darkness. This doesn’t mean you can’t peek at them now and then, but keep it to a minimum.
Keep it cool – 40°F to 50°F is ideal, but if you plan to use your seeds within a year or two, slightly warmer temperatures should not cause germination issues. We recommend basements or tucked into the bottom of a closet. Refrigerators and freezers are not recommended. Freezing seeds can harm seeds when they thaw, and refrigerators have a tendency to freeze and thaw items regardless of your temperature setting. Freezing and thawing is also a major signal it’s time for plants to grow, even when it’s not.
