As the flowers begin to take shape across your hemp fields it’s a good time to plan for pre-harvest compliance tests. If you are growing any of our CBD varieties, timing is imperative. If you are growing our CBG varieties, you are free to wait until the day of harvest.
With the exception of the autoflowers, all of our varieties behave similarly. If planted in June, they first begin to kick into flower around the second week of July as the days get shorter. The onset of flower isn’t evident until later, but about 25% of your plants will reach peak maturity 7-8 weeks later at the end of the first week of September. Another 40% will finish around the second week and the final 35% during the third.
This means for those who got a good early start, it's almost time for testing. Schedule it!
For our CBD dominant varieties, we highly recommend pre-harvest compliance tests be taken at the end of week 4 of flower – or no later than August 14 if you are on track for an early September start to your harvest. This is generally when flowers have reached thumb size in diameter (pictured above) and total THC content is generally around 0.1%-0.2%.
Plants must first reach sexual maturity before they flower. If your plants do not reach maturity until after the second week of July, the onset of flower will be delayed by the number of days or weeks after this time that they reached maturity. Maturity is generally reached 4-6 weeks after emergence, and often when plants are about 1'-1.5' tall. This can be variable depending on environmental conditions.
If you are in a state that requires testing 15 days before harvest and wish to push your testing and harvest as late as possible, be prepared to sample frequently starting no later than August 14, or when flowers are thumb sized. Waiting any longer can mean non-compliant total THC content.
Below are the basics on how our genetics generally behave in our trials, but have shown to perform similarly across the nation. These dates can be greatly affected by plant and environmental conditions, and may not be the case for you. Sluggish early growth and high nitrogen content in soils or heavy feeds can all delay the onset of flower. Stressful field conditions may cause your plants to go into flower even earlier.
Most importantly, pay attention to your plants. Remember to start sampling when flowers are no larger than the diameter of your thumb.
