For the last 5 years all of Oregon CBD's activities come to a grinding halt every Thursday (no exceptions) for an hour or two to come together and celebrate life, talk story, and share laughs over slices of sourdough crust pizza and occasionally a tasty beverage or two. With four campuses and 40 employees, it's the one time a week many of us see each other. All the while our benevolent founders foot the bill for an ample selection of top-notch pie.
In early years of pizza day, the three originals occupied a small corner of the restaurant with a lone table. Now our rambunctious crew occupies tables from end to end. I know this particular establishment has had to bump up their Thursday staff just to cope, but they don't seem to mind the business.
On one particular pizza day a few months ago we all abandoned a seemingly never ending supply of pots to fill mid-job in favor of slices. It quite certainly ended our chances of finishing the job in a day. I reached out to Seth in confusion -
"Don't you ever feel like pizza day gets in the way of productivity?"
He responded with a smile -
"Yeah, it's awesome!"
It clicked to me at that moment how hard we all work. Many of us clock well over 50 hours a week, and our minds rarely leave the farm. Oregon CBD is a place where Saturdays and Sundays are just names for days of the week. Plants don't clock out during the weekend and neither do the people who care for them.
Fortunately we all love what we do, and there is always Thursday.
